Brown made a big jump at the 2014 U.S. championships after finishing no higher than eighth in his first three attempts on the senior national level of America’s biggest stage. Considered third behind former champion Jeremy Abbott and reigning champ Max Aaron heading into the event, Brown surprised by finishing second and being selected to his first Olympic team less than a month after turning 19. Brown tends to win over crowds wherever he skates, and he proved to be a serious fan favorite in Boston, using jig steps in a free skate routine done to Irish step dance music that played well in a city with plenty of Irish pride. If Brown plans on contending for a medal in Sochi, though, he may have to add some more risky elements to his routine. Despite his technically sound and entertaining programs in Boston, Brown tends to err on the side of playing it safe while Abbott figures to pull out all the stops in making his routine as difficult as possible. Should Brown up the elements in his programs, however, it’s certainly possible for him to find himself contending for a medal in Sochi - something the Iceberg Skating Palace crowd would most certainly welcome.
