Scouting Report

Farley turned heads in the opening days of Virginia Tech's fall camp in 2017, pulling in a couple of long receptions at receiver before suffering a torn ACL which abruptly ended his season. If rehabilitating the injury and being asked to switch to cornerback were not difficult enough, Farley also lost his mother, Robin Farley, to a decade-long battle with cancer. Farley's triumphant return to the field was one of the Hokies' feel-good stories in 2018, and then he emerged as one of the best cornerbacks in the country in 2019, leading the ACC with 16 passes defensed, including four interceptions. He opted to bypass the 2020 season.

Despite being one of the top cornerbacks in this years draft there a major questions with his health. Farley has had multiple back surgeries over the past year because of a deadlift injury. His latest surgery was a minor one but did cause him to miss his pro day. He is still expected to be one of the first cornerbacks off the board.

Strengths: Ease of movement is obvious on tape with Farley alternately using a low and tight backpedal or sidestep in his initial drop and showing loose hips and greasy knees to fluidly change directions. Sudden accelerator with very good top-end speed. Excellent closing burst when coming downhill, planting his leg and driving toward the ball to break up short routes. Appears to be an ascending player whose resiliency on and off the field suggests he possesses the work ethic to take full advantage of his natural talent.

Weaknesses: Highly aggressive cover corner who likes to jump short routes, leaving him vulnerable to savvy double moves. Almost too poised with the ball in the air, too often opting to wait for the receiver to make an attempt at a catch and then ripping at his hands, rather than turning and locating the ball himself. Can get too focused on his primary cover responsibility with a delayed reaction in run support. Willing and physical tackler but could be more aggressive in this area, with some standing around the pile on tape.

Pro comparison: Jimmy Smith, Ravens - Like the 6-2, 210-pound Smith, Farley possesses rare size for the position, as well as the agility and straight-line speed for coverage duties. Farley shows more exciting ball-skills at this point of his career than Smith -- drafted in the first round in 2010 despite recording just three interceptions during his time at Colorado -- but, unfortunately, similar struggles with durability, at least recently.
