Alvarez: Big Ten to drop FCS scheduling

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Big Ten is planning to phase out games against Football Championship Subdivision opponents.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez said on WIBA-AM in Madison, Wis., Tuesday night the conference made the decision recently.

"The non-conference schedule in our league is ridiculous," Alvarez said. "It's not very appealing ...

"So we've made an agreement that our future games will all be (Football Bowl Subdivision) schools. It will not be FCS schools."

Big Ten teams went 8-0 against FCS competition this past season. Eventual FCS champion North Dakota State defeated Minnesota, 37-24, in 2011.

Some Big Ten schools have games scheduled against FCS opponents in the next three seasons, so the ban against playing FCS opponents figures to be phased in over time.
