Western Carolina dismisses defensive coordinator

Cullowhee, NC (Sports Network) - Matt Pawlowski will no longer serve as the assistant head coach or defensive coordinator at Western Carolina, interim athletic director Fred Cantler announced on Monday.

"I want to thank Matt Pawlowski for his service to Catamount athletics, the football program and our student-athletes," Cantler said. "Anyone who has been around Matt can attest to his passion for football and his competitive spirit. However, my evaluation of the status of the football program has led me to the conclusion that this change is in the best interest of the program."

Catamount head coach Dennis Wagner announced Jay Hood will become the interim defensive coordinator, while Mark Rhea has been named the new assistant head coach.

The Catamounts defense has struggled this season, allowing 46.1 points per game and 502.1 yards of total offense per game.

Western Carolina (1-7, 0-6) hosts No. 11 Wofford in a Southern Conference game Saturday.
