Western Carolina announces 10-game schedule

Cullowhee, NC (Sports Network) - Western Carolina football will kick off the 2011 season at Georgia Tech and play five home games.

The Catamounts will visit Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 1. The Yellow Jackets have won all four all-time meetings, most recently in 1994.

Western Carolina will host Mars Hill in its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 10. The Catamounts' other home games are in the Southern Conference against Furman (Oct. 1), Elon (Oct. 8), The Citadel (Oct. 22) and Wofford (Nov. 5).

A restructuring of some schedules in the Southern Conference has left Western Carolina with only 10 games. The second game of a two-year contract with Tusculum College would have had to be moved to a date the Pioneers' schedule could not accommodate. The Catamounts continue to seek an 11th game.

"We are excited about our 2011 schedule and the challenges it presents our football team," Western Carolina head coach Dennis Wagner said. "Opening our season at Georgia Tech on a Thursday night will create a lot of excitement to start the season off and help us prepare for the tough Southern Conference."

Western Carolina finished 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the SoCon in 2010.
