Blount named Delaware State football coach

Dover, DE (Sports Network) - The talk of Winston-Salem State moving to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference never came to fruition when Kermit Blount was the head football coach.

But Blount has become a head coach in the MEAC after all.

Delaware State University on Friday named Blount as its new head football coach. He replaces Al Lavan, who was not retained after three consecutive losing seasons and a 41-36 record in seven seasons.

"First of all, I want to thank President (Harry Lee) Williams and the DSU administration, along with the search committee, for the privilege of coaching the Hornets," said Blount, a native of Richmond, Va., who graduated from Winston-Salem State. "This program has a rich tradition, and the foundation for success is already in place. I'm looking forward to working with the university, our players, supporters and the community to take this team to the next level."

Blount compiled a 91-87-3 record in 17 seasons at Winston-Salem State before resigning in November 2009 to take on the position of special assistant to the director of athletics. He led the Rams to two CIAA titles and two Pioneer Bowl appearances, including a win in 1999.

In addition to his on-the-field successes, Blount increased the Winston-Salem players' graduation rate increased from 42 percent in 1993 to 80 percent by 2009.

Blount has 27 years of coaching experience, including stints at two other MEAC schools, Howard from 1984-89 and then the next four years at South Carolina State. He also coached at East Carolina.

Delaware State had been without a head coach for more than two months. Candy Young, the chair of Delaware State's search committee and associate athletics director/senior woman administrator, said there were more than 50 candidates.
