Delaware State fires football coach Lavan

Dover, DE (Sports Network) - Delaware State has fired head football coach Al Lavan after seven seasons, the school announced Thursday.

Lavan's team went 10-2 in 2007, when it was undefeated in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and clinched the school's first appearance in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

But the Hornets went just 12-20 over the last three seasons, including a 3-8 mark in 2010.

"While we can note that there have been some successes during the Lavan era - most notably the 2007 conference championship - the team has not been as competitive following that accomplishment as we believe it should have been," said athletics director Derek Carter said.

Defensive coordinator Rayford Petty has been appointed as the team's interim head coach, but Carter said the school will begin a national search to fill the position.

Lavan, who also spent more than 18 years in the NFL as an assistant and coached at a number of colleges, ends his tenure at DSU with a 41-36 record.
