NCAA Game Summary - Purdue at Iowa|
(Saturday, November 10)
Final Score: Purdue 27, Iowa 24
Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Paul Griggs' 46-yard field goal as time
expired lifted the Purdue Boilermakers to a 27-24 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes
in Big Ten Conference play at Kinnick Stadium.
Robert Marve completed 25-of-33 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns to
help the Boilermakers (4-6, 1-5 Big Ten) snap a five-game skid and keep their
postseason hopes alive. Purdue will need to win its final two games against
Illinois and Indiana to become bowl eligible. Ralph Bolden chipped in with 14
carries for 102 yards in the victory.
James Vandenberg threw for 190 yards and a touchdown for the fading Hawkeyes
(4-6, 2-4), who have lost four in a row for the first time since 2007. Iowa
finds itself needing to win its final two contests against Michigan and
Nebraska to earn bowl eligibility for the 12th consecutive season.
Purdue grabbed a 7-0 lead on Akeem Shavers' three-yard touchdown run midway
through the first quarter.
The Hawkeyes knotted the score at 7-7 on Damon Bullock's one-yard touchdown
plunge, which was set up by a fumble recovery at the Purdue 22. Iowa converted
a 4th-and-1 at the Purdue 11 to keep the drive alive.
However, Purdue responded with an 11-play, 75-yard drive that lasted five
minutes and ended with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Marve to Gabe Holmes.
The Boilermakers pushed their lead to 17-7 on Sam McCartney's 36-yard field
goal at the 10:23 mark of the third quarter.
The Hawkeyes answered with a 12-play, 69-yard drive, capped by Vandenberg's
five-yard scoring strike to C.J. Fiedorowicz to make it a 17-14 game.
A 10-yard scoring strike from Marve to Gary Bush three minutes later put
Purdue back on top by 10.
Iowa's Micah Hyde scored on a nine-yard fumble recovery in the final seconds
of the third quarter to close the gap to 24-21.
Hawkeyes kicker Mike Meyer knotted the score at 24 apiece with a 24-yard field
goal with just 3:32 to play in regulation.
Iowa got the ball back once more and decided to go for it on 4th-and-3 at the
Purdue 35 but came up two yards short, giving the ball back to Purdue with 16
seconds on the clock. Marve had a 17-yard scramble and a 20-yard completion to
move the ball to the Iowa 29, leaving just enough time for Griggs to kick the
game-winner from 46 yards away.
Purdue held a 490-264 edge in total offense but three fumbles allowed the
Hawkeyes to hang around. Iowa had won five of the previous six meetings in the
head-to-head series before today.
