GAME NOTES: Coming off a thrilling come-from-behind victory, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns will try to build upon that momentum on Saturday afternoon in their home finale against the South Alabama Jaguars.
South Alabama's first season as a full-time member of the FBS has not been a strong one with just two wins to show for it. The Jaguars are currently riding a four-game losing streak, with last week's setback coming at home against Middle Tennessee, 20-12. This will be their conference finale before they travel to Hawaii for a Dec. 1 matchup with the Warriors.
The Cajuns have had an up-and-down season, and prior to last week's game they had lost three of four, but down 10 points late in the fourth quarter, they managed to score a pair of unanswered touchdowns in the final 2:43 to pull off an improbable 31-27 win over Western Kentucky. With still two conference games to play, Louisiana's hopes of winning the Sun Belt championship, however slim, are still alive.
This is the first meeting between these two schools on the football field.
South Alabama (18.5 ppg) has one of the worst offenses in the nation. It is the only team in the Sun Belt that doesn't score at least 20 ppg and its 341.3 ypg tops only Florida Atlantic's 334.5 ypg.
Ross Metheny has been inconsistent since taking over the starting QB role from C.J. Bennett. He's thrown for 10 touchdowns and has topped 189 passing yards in seven games, but he's also throw 10 interceptions, three of which came last week.
Jereme Jones has emerged as Metheny's top receiver as he leads the team in receptions (39), yards (444), and touchdowns (six). Bryant Lavender has piled up 36 catches and 306 yards but he has yet to find the end zone.
Demetre Baker (595 yards, three TDs) is the team's leading rusher but he missed last week's game. In his absence, Terrence Timmons rushed the ball 18 times for 76 yards.
The defense (28.0 ppg, 366.4 ypg) has played much better than the Jaguars' record shows. Although Middle Tennessee put up 445 yards last week, they held the seven-win Blue Raiders to just 20 points.
Jake Johnson piled up 15 tackles last week, adding to his team-high of 113. Enrique Williams is the next closest teammate with 92 tackles. Tyrell Pearson has three interceptions, and Alex Page (10.5 TFL, five sacks) and Pat Moore (nine TFL, 4.5 sacks) have done solid work behind the line of scrimmage.
Louisiana is averaging 33 ppg on more than 430 ypg thanks in large part to its dual-threat quarterback, who is coming off a career-game.
Terrance Broadway racked up 403 yards of total offense (258 passing, 145 rushing) last week, and he accounted for both of the late touchdowns to propel his team to victory. The QB has been great all season long, completing 65.7 percent of his passes for 2,053 yards, 13 TDs and eight INTs, while rushing for another 473 yards and six scores.
With defenses keying on Broadway, Alonzo Harris (634 yards, five TDs) is often left with plenty of room to run, and he took advantage against WKU with 104 yards on just 10 carries.
Harry Peoples caught a career-high 13 passes last week for 144 yards, upping his team-high receiving totals to 55 receptions and 606 yards. Jamal Robinson (450 yards, three TDs) has also broken loose in recent weeks as he averages a whopping 26.5 yards per catch.
Like most defenses in the Sun Belt, Louisiana has plenty of weakness on that side of the ball (28.0 ppg, 419.2 ypg), and it allowed more than 260 yards rushing against WKU.
Rodney Gillis has accounted for five of the team's 16 takeaways, with four interceptions and a fumble recovery. Justin Anderson has recorded 82 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and two sacks.
Louisiana has had a knack for coming up with big plays this year, and there should be plenty to be had in this one playing at home against a lackluster South Alabama squad.
