GAME NOTES: Western Kentucky aims for its fourth consecutive victory on Saturday, when the Hilltoppers take on the Troy Trojans in Sun Belt Conference action at Trojan Arena.
The Trojans enter tonight's game trying to bounce back from a two-point loss to Arkansas-Little Rock. The setback was the second straight for Troy, which had strung together three wins prior to that.
The Hilltoppers meanwhile, have had a strong start to their 2012-13 campaign, sitting at 5-2 overall. Western Kentucky has won three straight games and finishes up a five-game span that has seen the team play four games on the road.
Western Kentucky has lost its last four games at Troy and has not won on the road in the series since the 2007-08 season. All of those contests were played at Sartain Hall, which gave way to Trojan Arena for the new home of Troy's hoops team this year. WKU has lost four of the last five meetings overall.
On Thursday, T.J. Price scored a career-high 30 points in the road victory over the ULM Warhawks in the conference opener. Price connected on 10-of-19 shots while knocking down 5-of-11 from three-point range for WKU. He also grabbed six rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked three shots. Jamal Crook has led WKU in scoring in five of the first seven games of the season, as the senior guard is averaging 16.3 points per game. Price (16.0 ppg) is a close second, while sophomore forward George Fant (10.0 ppg) is also in double figures. The Hilltoppers lead the SBC in rebounding and field goal defense.
Hunter Williams scored 11 points and dished out seven assists to lead Troy in defeat last time out. Emil Jones chipped in with 10 points. Troy attempted just two free throws in the contest, compared to a 14-of-22 effort from UALR. Ray Chambers scored eight points and tied a career-high with 11 boards in the loss. The Trojans are led in scoring by Williams (11.5 ppg), while Jones is close behind at 9.8 ppg and is also averaging a team-high 5.6 rebounds per contest.
This year has been turnaround for the Hilltoppers. Their fifth win of the season Thursday came exactly one month earlier than their fifth victory last season. A victory here would make the Hilltoppers 2-0 in Sun Belt play for the first time in three seasons.
