GAME NOTES: The Murray State Racers put their 16-game road winning streak to the test again as they travel to UD Arena to take on the Dayton Flyers in a non-conference bout.
The Racers continued their impressive success away from home with a 61-54 victory at Arkansas State on Wednesday night. While MSU had a season-low 21 field goals and .412 shooting percentage, its strong defense was what led it to its sixth straight win since losing on Nov. 18 against Colorado in the title game of the Charleston Classic.
Murray State's school-record road winning streak is remarkable, as the Racers were the only undefeated road team last season in Division I, going 13-0. MSU's last road defeat was the final game of the 2010-11 season at Missouri State in the NIT on March 15, 2011. Head coach Steve Prohm became the fastest to 40 wins in school history with his team's victory at ASU. Prohm has 40 wins in 43 games surpassing the previous best by Mick Cronin (2003-05) who had 40 wins in 53 games. Cronin, now the head coach at Cincinnati. MSU's All-American Isaiah Canaan enters the UD game ranked eighth in the nation with a 21.0 scoring average.
Dayton played at MSU last season with the Racers winning 75-58. The Flyers lead the series 5-3 with four games having been played in the 1950s and two in the 1960s.
Dayton is hoping to bounce back after a tough one-point loss at home to Illinois State on Wednesday. Kevin Dillard and Dyshawn Pierre each scored 14 points in the setback, while Josh Benson finished with 13 points. The Flyers were accurate early, shooting 48.4 percent from the field in the first half but they trailed at the break, 42-40. While the Flyers did make 46.7 of their shots from the field, they managed to hit just one of their six 3-point attempts after halftime. After Dayton took a one-point lead (62-61) with just under eight minutes to play, ISU scored the next seven points to go back ahead for good. Dayton had two chances to win the game in the final seconds, but both shots were off the mark, allowing the Redbirds to escape with the victory.
Dayton, 8-3 overall, has won seven of its last nine with the two losses coming by one point apiece. Dayton has three of the Top-30 scorers in the Atlantic 10 Conference in Kevin Dillard (15.0 ppg), Vee Sanford (11.7 ppg) and Josh Benson (11.6 ppg). Dillard will be a game-time decision due to back spasms suffered in Wednesday's game. As a team, Dayton ranks second in the A-10 in field goal percentage (.473), and defensive rebounding (29.4 rpg).
Dayton is hoping to rebound from a close loss and usually plays well at home, but Murray State has been on fire on the road over the past two seasons and its strong start this year would indicate that the trend should continue.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Murray State 76, Dayton 72
