Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Led by 16 points from Frank Gaines, the IUPU-Fort Wayne Mastodons downed the UMKC Kangaroos, 65-60, in a Summit League battle at Swinney Recreation Center.
Joe Reed added 12 points and Mario Hines chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds for the Mastodons (11-16, 4-9 Summit).
For the Kangaroos (7-20, 4-9), Fred Chatmon came off the bench and posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Estan Tyler finished with 15 points.
The Mastodons made 47.8 percent of their shots from the field in the first half as they took a 34-26 lead into the break. The Kangaroos shot 43.5 percent from the field, but missed all but one of their nine 3-point tries through the first 20 minutes.
After halftime the Mastodons continued to shoot the ball well, draining 52.4 percent of their field goal tries. Though the Kangaroos improved to 45.2 percent shooting, they still struggled from the perimeter, making just 3-of-15 beyond the arc in the second half. The Mastodons led for the entire half, holding on the for the victory and snapping a nine-game road skid.
The Mastodons had a 16-8 scoring advantage at the free-throw line. UMKC had a slight edge on the boards, 31-29
