NCAA Game Summary - Manhattan at Marist

(Friday, December 7)

Final Score: Marist 62, Manhattan 58

Poughkeepsie, NY (Sports Network) - Chavaughn Lewis finished with 17 points as the Marist Red Foxes held off the Manhattan Jaspers to earn a 62-58 decision in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams at McCann Arena.

Devin Price chipped in 14 points in 40 minutes of action for Marist (3-5, 1-0 MAAC) as it ended a two-game losing slide. Jay Bowie saw limited action due to foul trouble, but still managed to chip in 11 points while Isaiah Morton contributed 10 points, and five assists.

Michael Alvarado scored a game-high 19 points off the bench for Manhattan (2-5, 0-1), which overcame a 15-point second half deficit before falling for the second game in a row. The Jaspers were without leading scorer George Beamon who was unable to play due to an ankle injury.

Marist knocked down 52.4 percent of its field goal attempts including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first half to take control in the early stages of the contest. The Jaspers went into the intermission trailing 34-25 after they shot only 29.2 percent from the field and converted just 8-of-16 at the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes.

Manhattan faced a 47-32 deficit with 11:02 left in regulation before it put together a late rally. The Jaspers produced an 18-2 run to take a 58-55 lead with only three minutes remaining, but Bowie tied the score with a make from distance 80 seconds later. Neither side made another field goal the rest of the way, but the Red Foxes added four free throws to escape with the win.

Thanks to Alvarado, Manhattan's bench scored 30 points while Marist's reserves tallied just seven points. The Jaspers also held a 36-27 edge in the rebounding battle.
