Jersey City, NJ (Sports Network) - Ben Averkamp scored 17 points to lead the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers over the Saint Peter's Peacocks, 54-49, in non- conference action at the Yanitelli Center.
Averkamp earned most of his points at the charity stripe, shooting a perfect 13-of-13 at the line, in the sixth win in seven tries for the Ramblers (8-3). Joe Crisman was 5-of-5 from the field for 12 points, while Christian Thomas scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds.
For Saint Peter's (5-6), Yvon Raymond was the only player to score in double figures with 17 points to go with his seven rebounds and four steals as the Peacocks suffered a sixth loss in eight games. Darius Conley added seven points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Saint Peter's led 17-16 at halftime after both teams struggled offensively, with the Peacocks shooting 29.6 percent from the field and the Ramblers shooting 25.0 percent.
In the second half Loyola trailed by as many as 11 points, but a 19-7 run saw it take the lead with two minutes remaining. After the Peacocks tied the game at the 1:07 mark, 46-46, the Ramblers connected on 8-of-10 at the free-throw line in the final 40 seconds to hold on for the victory.
Both teams shot below 40.0 percent from the field, but Loyola earned 23 points from free throws compared to only six for Saint Peter's which shot just 6- of-19 (.316) at the line.
