CBA expansion continues with Great Falls franchise
Albany, NY (Sports Network) - The Continental Basketball Association continued its wave of expansion, adding a team in Great Falls, Montana for the 2006-07 season.
The team in Great Falls is owned by Apex Sportstainment, which has already added teams in San Jose and Butte, Montana. The Butte franchise was revealed on Wednesday, and there will be still another announcement for a fourth Apex team in the league.
"We're proud to announce our second expansion team in Montana this week in Great Falls," said Apex CEO and managing partner Joe Clark. "We expect to put a very competitive team on the floor that will represent the city of Great Falls and the surrounding communities; we hope to grow into a very successful franchise, which will make the citizens proud. The state of Montana has just increased its chances of winning the CBA title, with teams in Butte and Great Falls."
The Great Falls area previously had a CBA team from 1980-83, when the Montana Golden Nuggets were a contender under head coach George Karl. The Golden Nuggets were in the CBA Finals twice.
This edition of the Great Falls club will be called the Explorers after the famous duo of Lewis and Clark.
Great Falls has also named a head coach for next season, selecting Steve Aggers to guide the club. Aggers was the head coach of the College of Great Falls from 1979-85, compiling a record of 104-42 with three conference championships.
"We are extremely pleased to have Coach Aggers lead the Great Falls Explorers. He is a proven head coach who has had a distinguished career at the college level, and we look forward to having him build a solid, winning team in Great Falls," said Kermit Young, Director of Basketball Operations for Apex Sportstainment.
Aggers last coached at Loyola Marymount University from 2000-05, and has also held head college jobs at Eastern Washington (1995-2000) and Wayne State College (1985-90).
