McGillis named Southern Mississippi AD
Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - The University of Southern Mississippi named Bill McGillis as the university's athletics director on Thursday.
McGillis' official start date has yet to be determined. Deputy athletics director Jeremy McClain is currently serving as interim athletics director.
"Bill McGillis is a seasoned and experienced athletic administrator who has a proven record of helping student-athletes accomplish their academic and athletic goals," said Southern Mississippi president Rodney Bennett. "He has built winning programs that compete at the highest levels, and has the ability to develop strong relationships with stakeholders. I have no doubt that Bill is the right person to best build on our tradition of athletics excellence and position us for future success."
Prior to his hiring, McGillis was executive associate athletics director at the University of South Florida since 2007.
In McGillis' first year, USF nearly doubled in football ticket sales, from 30,000 per game in 2006 to more than 53,000 per contest in 2007.
He was also responsible for the university's $69 million renovation of its Athletics District, which began in 2009, including the construction of new baseball and softball stadiums, soccer stadium and track stadium. Construction was completed over a two-year period and is believed to be the single largest athletics project undertaken at a Division 1 school in decades.
McGillis also served as director of athletics at the University of Evansville and associate athletics director positions at the University of New Mexico and the University of Houston.
