NHL Game Summary - Winnipeg at NY Islanders
(Wednesday, November 27th)
Final Score: Winnipeg 3, NY Islanders 2
Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Stuart, Andrew Ladd and Devin Setoguchi tallied in the second period, leading Winnipeg to a 3-2 decision over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.
Al Montoya bested his former club by posting 28 saves for the Jets, who have won two in a row to begin a six-game road trip to chase away the memory of four consecutive losses.
"We gave them some life late, but we managed the game well when it counted most," Jets head coach Claude Noel said. "Al made some big stops for us and we found a way to hold on."
Andrew MacDonald and John Tavares scored for the Islanders, losers of four straight and nine of 11. Kevin Poulin stopped 26 shots in the setback.
Tavares pulled the hosts within a goal as 5:59 flashed on the third-period clock, and New York was awarded a power play less than a minute later.
Montoya denied Kyle Okposo from atop the crease to start the advantage, then Poulin robbed Evander Kane on a short-handed break at the tail end.
Winnipeg embarked on its own power play, preventing Poulin from being pulled until 35 seconds remained.
New York had little in the tank for an equalizer.
"You've got to want the puck more than the other guy out there. We need that on every shift and it's not there," said Tavares. "When we have everyone going as a team, we're tough to play against. We need more from everyone."
After a scoreless first period, the Islanders received the game's first break when Poulin robbed Matt Halischuk alone in front with the left pad midway through regulation.
The Jets managed to hit the back of the net almost 90 seconds later when James Wright won a left-circle draw back to Stuart, who ripped a shot off the far pipe and in the net.
Ladd doubled the lead with 5:21 remaining, finishing off a Blake Wheeler give- and-go by beating Poulin on the backhand and it was 3-0 on a Setoguchi deflection just over two minutes later.
MacDonald's blast from the left point off a Thomas Vanek pass put the Isles on the board during a power play with 2:11 to go in the middle frame.
Atlanta/Winnipeg has won four of its last six games on Long Island ... Both clubs are back in action on Friday, as the Jets head to Philadelphia and the Islanders welcome Detroit.
