NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Los Angeles
(Saturday, January 11th)
Final Score: Detroit 3, Los Angeles 1
Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tomas Tatar and Daniel Cleary scored in the third period to lift the Detroit Red Wings over the Los Angeles Kings, 3-1, on Saturday.
Riley Sheahan scored his first NHL goal for the Red Wings, who improved to 2-1-0 on a five-game road trip. Jimmy Howard stopped 44-of-45 shots.
Drew Doughty scored the lone goal for the Kings, who fell to 2-1-1 on a five- game homestand. Jonathan Quick turned aside 23-of-26 shots.
Tatar scored an emotional goal at 12:06 of the third period. Quick kicked out Sheahan's shot from the left circle to Tatar, who found the back of the net. Tatar, whose father died this week, pointed up to the rafters.
"As I'm sure you know, my dad passed away two days ago," Tatar said. "This game and my goal were for him. It's really hard for me to talk about, it was a big loss for me."
Cleary gave the Red Wings a two-goal cushion at the 17:26 mark. Luke Glendening slid a pass to the slot for Cleary, who beat Quick with a wrist shot.
Earlier, Doughty scored on a two-man advantage at the 14:10 mark of the first period. Doughty's one-timer from the high slot got past Howard, making it 1-0 Kings.
Sheahan put home a rebound at 17:11 to tie the game.
Los Angeles outshot Detroit by a 15-9 margin during a scoreless second stanza.
"I think starting the second period we had several opportunities where we didn't shoot the puck," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "Those are really 1-1 games so leaving it until the third there is a chance you are not going to get a reward for a great effort."
The Red Wings have won six of their past eight versus the Kings ... Tatar scored a goal in his third straight game ... Detroit was without forwards Pavel Datsyuk (lower body), Darren Helm (groin) and Daniel Alfredsson (back spasms) ... The Red Wings went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Kings went 1-for-4.
