NHL Game Summary - Los Angeles at Chicago
(Sunday, June 2nd)
Final Score: Chicago 4, Los Angeles 2
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Corey Crawford posted 29 saves and 10 different Blackhawks registered at least one point in Chicago's 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals from United Center.
Andrew Shaw, Brent Seabrook, Michal Handzus and Bryan Bickell each scored once, while Patrick Sharp and Brandon Saad added a pair of assists apiece to help the Blackhawks grab a 2-0 series lead.
"We're cycling the puck well," Shaw said. "We're going to the net and taking pucks to the dirty areas. We're rewarded that way."
Tyler Toffoli tallied a goal and an assist for the Kings in place of an injured Mike Richards, who skated in pregame warmups but was unable to play after taking a big hit from Chicago's Dave Bolland late in the third period of LA's 2-1 setback in Game 1.
"I talked to him for a minute before the game," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said of Richards. "I didn't feel and he didn't feel he should play, either."
Jeff Carter registered the other goal for the Kings, while starting goaltender Jonathan Quick gave up four goals on 17 shots before being removed near the midpoint of the second period.
Jonathan Bernier stopped all nine shots he faced in relief for the defending champion Kings, who will look to get back on track Tuesday when the series shifts to Los Angeles for Game 3.
Chicago struck twice in the opening frame, with Shaw starting the scoring just 1:56 into the contest.
Saad made a nice play to keep the puck in the LA zone along the left boards before feeding the disc to Viktor Stalberg. Stalberg then found a cutting Shaw, who buried the disc in the back of the net from the low right side.
The Blackhawks doubled their edge with under a minute remaining when Seabrook rifled a shot from the right faceoff dot that beat Quick to the far side to make it 2-0 with 50.4 seconds left.
Chicago netted a pair of goals in a 2:09 span near the midpoint of the second to extend the lead.
After LA winger Dwight King was whistled for tripping at the 5:28 mark, Sharp fired a shot from the high slot that was knocked down in front, but with his back to the net, Bickell was able to pound the rebound past Quick for a 3-0 lead at 7:11.
Chicago pushed the lead to 4-0 just over two minutes later when Sharp touched the puck to Handzus, who skated into the slot before ripping a shot past the blocker-side of Quick.
The Kings finally cracked the scoreboard late in the second stanza when Carter blasted a one-timer from the low left circle that beat Crawford high to the short-side to make it 4-1 with 1:03 left in the period.
Toffoli potted a power-play tally with 1:02 left in the contest, but it was too little, too late, as the Blackhawks held on for the victory.
Chicago improved to 8-1 at home during the playoffs ... LA also trailed the St. Louis Blues 2-0 in their quarterfinal series before storming back to win that set ... The Kings went 1-for-4 on the power play ... Chicago had killed off all 26 power plays at home this postseason before Toffoli's goal late in the third.
