Lehtonen, Stars blank Pens
Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Kari Lehtonen turned away 24 shots for his third shutout of the season as the Dallas Stars took a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
Sergei Gonchar, Jamie Benn and Rich Peverley all scored for the Stars, who have won their past three.
"The last three games have all been excellent from all three zones. Tonight was a very good win for our team," Stars head coach Lindy Rupp said.
Marc-Andre Fleury gave up all three goals on 28 shots for the Penguins, who had won four of five coming in.
"We just didn't execute well. They came pretty hard, and we didn't find a way to execute and create chances ourselves," Penguins forward Sidney Crosby said.
The Stars got on the board at 15:02 of the first period while on the power play as Gonchar took a feed in the high slot from Ray Whitney and blasted it home.
It was a 2-0 game 3:13 into the second on the power play as Alex Goligoski sent a pass from the left point to the low right side where Benn had a wide- open net for his 19th of the year.
Dallas took a 3-0 advantage just past the midway mark of the second frame as Shawn Horcoff hit a flying Peverley with a pass and Peverley was able to wrist one past Fleury's glove for his seventh of the season.
Lehtonen stopped 12 shots in the third to polish off the shutout.
Dallas hosts Colorado on Monday ... Pittsburgh hosts Buffalo on Monday ... Pittsburgh had won both meetings with Dallas during the 2011-12 season, and the two sides hadn't met last season ... Lehtonen has 25 shutouts in his career.
