Alfredsson, Detroit snap home skid in OT vs. Flames
Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Daniel Alfredsson scored his second goal 63 seconds into overtime as the Detroit Red Wings edged the Calgary Flames, 3-2, at Joe Louis Arena.
The Red Wings got a power play when Calgary defenseman TJ Brodie was whistled for hooking with 42 seconds left in regulation. On the ensuing power play, Pavel Datsyuk fed Alfredsson for a one-timer in the slot.
"We're hanging in games and we're playing some good hockey, and then all of a sudden, we have some lapses where we give the other team way too many chances," said Alfredsson. "We did that at times (tonight) too, but we grinded throughout the whole time, 60 minutes, and obviously Pavel's play there at the end of regulation to draw the penalty turns out to be huge."
Jonas Gustavsson made 20 saves for the Red Wings, who snapped a six-game winless streak (0-4-2) and avoided a sixth consecutive loss at home.
Mikael Backlund and Mark Giordano both scored for Calgary, which fell to 1-1-2 on its five-game road trip. Karri Ramo stopped 35 shots in defeat.
Alfredsson pounced on a rebound to open the scoring 26 seconds into the contest.
Backlund tied things up with a fluttering shot at the 5:11 mark of the first period. The forward had a chance to give Calgary the lead, but he was denied on a short-handed breakaway roughly two minutes later.
The Red Wings went back on top when Alfredsson's right-point blast deflected in off teammate Joakim Andersson at 11:38 of the second period.
Giordano knotted the score on a power play with a wrister from between the circles at 15:53 of the second.
"Our power play's needed to give our team momentum, whether we score or not," said Flames forward Mike Cammalleri. "We were finally able to tonight."
Alfredsson picked up his 700th career assist ... Datsyuk had three assists ... The Red Wings had lost their last 11 home overtime games. It was the longest such streak in the NHL since 1986-87.
