Avalanche ink D O'Brien to 3-year contract

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - The Colorado Avalanche signed defenseman Shane O'Brien to a three-year contract on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old O'Brien would have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

"Having Shane under contract further solidifies our blueline," said Avalanche general manager Greg Sherman. "He brings energy to our lineup and we're pleased to have signed him to a multi-year deal."

O'Brien registered three goals and tied a career high with 17 assists in 76 games last season, his first as a member of the Avalanche.

An eighth-round selection by Anaheim in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, O'Brien has totaled 13 goals, 84 points and 793 penalty minutes in 455 career games with the Ducks, Tampa Bay, Vancouver, Nashville and Colorado.
