Malhotra signs two-way deal with Hurricanes

Raleigh, NC ( - The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to terms with veteran center Manny Malhotra on a one-year, two-way contract.

Malhotra had been playing for Carolina's American Hockey League affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, since signing a professional tryout contract at the beginning of the month.

"Manny brings a level of veteran leadership to the Hurricanes organization and gives the team depth at the center position," general manager Jim Rutherford said in a statement Thursday. "He has demonstrated in his career that he can be an extremely good defensive player and face-off man."

The 33-year-old was limited to nine games last season with the Vancouver Canucks because of a recurring eye injury that he initially sustained on March 16, 2011.

Selected seventh overall by the New York Rangers in 1998, Malhotra has totaled 108 goals and 170 assists in 864 career games with New York, Dallas, Columbus, San Jose and Vancouver.
