Rangers place Asham, Biron on waivers
New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Fallout from the New York Rangers' dismal 1-4-0 start has begun.
On Monday, the struggling club announced that both forward Arron Asham and backup goaltender Martin Biron have been placed on waivers.
Teams have 24 hours to claim either player, and if not, both can be assigned to the minors or choose retirement.
If Asham clears and is assigned to Hartford of the American Hockey League, the Rangers will be on the hook for a $75,000 cap hit, while Biron's cap hit will be $375,000 with the Wolf Pack, according to the Daily News.
"I have to talk with my family and get advice from some different people, then I'll see what comes out of it," Biron admitted.
Asham has racked up 14 penalty minutes and is a minus-3 over three games without a point this season.
"I have no hard feelings..I'll go down and play hard," Asham said when asked if he's ready for an assignment to the minors if he is not claimed.
Biron has gone 0-1-0 with a 7.61 goals-against average and .763 save percentage in two appearances, including an infamous relief stint for starter Henrik Lundqvist in a 9-2 loss at San Jose where he was victimized by Sharks rookie Tomas Hertl's behind-the-back and between-the-legs breakaway goal late in the contest.
"It's a performance-based business and the organization felt that Marty's first two performances are not what we expected," said Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault.
