Panthers D Campbell wins Lady Byng
Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Florida Panthers defenseman Brian Campbell was a surprise selection for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which is given to the player who best exhibits sportsmanship and excellence on the ice.
Campbell, once a feared hitter who starred for the Buffalo Sabres and Chicago Blackhawks, became just the third defenseman ever to win the award, and first since Detroit's Red Kelly following the 1953-54 season. He also set precedent as the first Panthers player to be so honored.
In 82 games this season, Campbell ranked second among defensemen in scoring with 53 points. He also went to the penalty box just three times.
The 33-year-old Ontario native was picked ahead of Edmonton's Jordan Eberle and Matt Moulson of the New York Islanders.
Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning won the previous two seasons. For the first time since Alexander Mogilny in 2003, no member of either the Bolts or Red Wings claimed the honor.
