Description: Wide receiver Derrick Mason retired from the NFL on Monday.
Insight: And he did it as a member of the Baltimore Ravens, a team he played six seasons for between 2005-2010. Four of Mason's eight career 1,000-yard efforts came with the Ravens. He retires with 66 touchdowns on 943 receptions over his 15-year NFL career. Mason caught 19 balls for 170 yards last season in 12 games with the Jets and Texans.

Insight: Mason will immediately move into the slot, replacing Jacoby Jones... especially when Andre Johnson gets back. In the meantime, Mason will join Jones and Kevin Walter in the receiving corps. For New York, Jeremy Kerley gets promoted to starting slot receiver behind Holmes and Burress.

Insight: This shouldn't affect any of Plaxico Burress's fantasy value, but it could hinder Dustin Keller. If Mason has anything left in the tank, the proven WR could be safety net for Mark Sanchez as a possession receiver. The Jets are just kicking the tires, but it is possible that Mason is done.

Description: According to league sources, the Ravens informed TE Todd Heap, wide receiver Derrick Mason, nose tackle Kelly Gregg and running back Willis McGahee that they will be released only a few hours after the NFL and its players agreed on a new 10-year collective bargaining agreement Monday, turning this city's football world upside down. SOURCE: BALTIMORE SUN
Insight: McGahee isn't a surprise on this list, but Heap and Gregg do come as a bit "shocking". Baltimore might be able to bring one or more of these guys back, but at a reduced contract. Mason might opt to retire.

Description: According to the Ravens' NFLPA rep Derrick Mason, it's becoming "less and less likely" that the NFL season will begin on time. SOURCE: TWITTER
Insight: Mason also says he is "trying to be optimistic, but it's getting worse." His is just a single opinion amongst many, but it appears that Mason's thoughts could be legitimate. As far as we know, there is no end in sight for the lockout to be lifted.

3/9/2011 9:01:00 AM
Description: The Carroll County Times reported recently that Mason has no plans to retire.
Insight: That's particularly noteworthy since Mason actually announced his retirement last off-season before returning about a day later. Mason was a more dependable fantasy performer than more-heralded new teammate Anquan Boldin in 2010. He's likely to deliver good fantasy ROI, as many continue to expect a production drop. Description: Ravens WR Derrick Mason is "considered likely" to return for the 2011 season. SOURCE: CARROLL COUNTY TIMES
Insight: It will be his 15th season. Mason recently underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia and a broken finger on his right hand. He came up short in the playoffs, with one catch in two weeks, and he will likely take a smaller role in 2011.

1/17/2011 12:00:00 PM
Description: Could Mason's three-target, no-catch game against the Steelers Saturday be his last as a Raven? The 37-year-old is due $4.5 million in what would be his 13th NFL season in 2011.
Insight: After a slowish start to the season, Mason grabbed six touchdown catches over the final nine games. He matched Anquan Boldin in touchdowns and yards per catch for the season and finished with just three fewer receptions. Mason nearly retired once already before promptly changing his mind, so we'll see what this off-season brings. Baltimore will need to strengthen its receiving corps either way. (RapidDraft.com)

1/3/2011 4:04:00 PM
Description: Mason caught three passes for 34 yards in Sunday's win.
Insight: That pushed the veteran past 60 catches (61) for the 11th straight season, joining him with Tony Gonzalez and Jerry Rice as the only players to accomplish the feat. Mason was a solid fantasy option this year, considering that many expected a statistical downturn with Anquan Boldin's arrival. (RapidDraft.com)

12/26/2010 11:01:00 PM
Description: Mason caught four passes for 50 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win at Cleveland.
Insight: Mason once again outproduced Anquan Boldin. He has been a helpful player -- as usual -- for fantasy folks late this year. (RapidDraft.com)

12/19/2010 6:03:00 PM
Description: Mason caught just one pass on Sunday for 42 yards. It was his third game of fewer than four catches in the past five weeks.
Insight: Mason alternated strong and weak fantasy outings over his past five games, but this one was foreseeable against arguably the league's toughest matchup for receivers. (RapidDraft.com)

12/19/2010 8:01:00 AM
Description: Mason was back in full practice by Friday after missing the beginning of the week to rest an ailing ankle.
Insight: Mason shouldn't carry injury concern. He does, however, face a very tough matchup with New Orleans. Mason is a starting option -- and probably a stronger one right now than Anquan Boldin -- but not a strong option for the week overall. (RapidDraft.com)

12/16/2010 6:33:00 PM
Description: Ravens WR Derrick Mason missed practice again today with a sore ankle. SOURCE: TWITTER
Insight: This is typical for Mason. At his age, it's expected that he's going to miss practices but be ready for games. His injury was suffered late in Monday night's game but it's not thought to be serious.

12/16/2010 12:05:00 AM
Description: Mason missed practice Wednesday to rest an ankle, but it's not expected to be a real issue.
Insight: Mason caught a pair of touchdown passes on Monday night and has been alternating between good and mediocre weeks lately. The Saints present a tough passing matchup, but Mason is at least as good a bet as Anquan Boldin right now. (RapidDraft.com)

11/13/2010 1:03:00 PM
Description: Mason came away from Thursday night's loss to Atlanta with another fracture of the right pinkie finger he broke just a few weeks ago.
Insight: Mason played through the previous injury, so we have to figure he'll do so again. He also has scored in two straight games while catching four passes in each. Mason isn't a dynamic fantasy option but a solid performer in a good offense. (RapidDraft.com)

11/12/2010 3:09:00 AM
Description: Ravens WR Derrick Mason may have re-broken his surgically-repaired finger on his fourth and final reception Thursday night (Week 10) vs. Atlanta. SOURCE: TWITTER
Insight: Mason finished the night with four receptions (on six targets) for 48 yards and a TD, but it was the touchdown reception that he believes may have re-broken the finger. Mason had pins placed in his finger during the bye week and the way he caught the ball could have forced one of the pins out. Either way, we imagine he'll find a way to play as he hasn't missed a game in eight seasons.

11/7/2010 10:00:00 PM
Description: Mason caught four passes for 42 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's victory.
Insight: It was just Mason's second touchdown of the season, first since Week 2. He has been contributing solidly in PPR formats of late, though. (RapidDraft.com)

10/27/2010 9:53:00 AM
Description: It was revealed that Ravens WR Derrick Mason underwent surgery to repair a broken right pinky finger on Monday. SOURCE: BALTIMORE SUN
Insight: With the Ravens' bye this weekend, Mason will have plenty of time to be ready by Week Nine.

10/4/2010 1:03:00 AM
Description: Mason led the team with 80 receiving yards in Week 4 on six catches. Five of those receptions and 70 yards came in the first quarter.
Insight: Joe Flacco actually threw fewer passes than in weeks 1 and 2, so the extra targets Mason saw can't be chalked up to a particularly busy passing day. He'll have other games like this one. (RapidDraft.com)

9/20/2010 12:03:00 PM
Description: Mason caught the team's lone touchdown pass of Week 2, but that was his only reception among six targets.
Insight: Let's wait to see what Mason can do when the matchups get better. He faced Darrelle Revis a fair amount in Week 1, and the Bengals boast arguably the league's best starting corner duo. Mason brings far too long a track record for us to worry already, especially considering his low price at draft time. (RapidDraft.com)
