Description: According to the Charlotte Observer's Joe Person, Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said there's "no doubt" Cam Newton will play Week 1 despite his rib injury.
Insight: Newton has a hairline fracture in a few of his ribs, but normally, quarterbacks can play through this type of injury. Rivera also added that the zone-read will still be in play despite the injury. All good signs for Newton, but we will keep an eye on the situation the next week and a half.

Description: According to the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers don't expect to know quarterback Cam Newton's status for Week 1 until next week. Newton sustained a hairline fracture in one of his ribs Saturday night.
Insight: Coach Ron Rivera said Newton won't play in the final preseason game, but he expects him to play in the season opener at Tampa Bay. In addition to the injury to his ribs, Newton is still recovering from offseason ankle surgery and his rushing output could be lean early in the season. Derek Anderson is Newton's backup.

Description: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has a hairline fracture in his ribs, according to Steve Reed of the Associated Press.
Insight: Newton took a shot to the ribs during Saturday's preseason game. He won't play in the fourth exhibition contest, but coach Ron Rivera thinks he'll be ready for Week 1. In addition to the injury to his ribs, Newton is still recovering from offseason ankle surgery and his rushing output could be lean early in the season.

Description: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton suffered a back bruise late in the second quarter against the New England Patriots on Friday. Newton underwent X-rays as a precaution according to ESPN, and head coach Ron Rivera said they came back negative.
Insight: The bruise happened when Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins nailed Newton in the back after the quarterback scrambled seven yards. Newton entered the game with questions about his ankle due to offseason surgery. Rivera expects both Newton's back and ankle to be fine by Week 1.

8/10/2014 7:45:00 PM
Description: According to ESPN.com, the Panthers have medically cleared Cam Newton (ankle) to play in their second preseason game next Sunday against the Chiefs.
Insight: Newton was also given clearance during Sunday's practice to run the read option for the first time since training camp began. He's been rehabbing from left ankle surgery since March. The fourth-year quarterback has top-three fantasy QB upside, but he's going 10th among quarterbacks at an ADP of 82.

Description: The Panthers held quarterback Cam Newton (ankle surgery) out of the first preseason game Friday night.
Insight: Newton is dealing with lingering pain from his ankle surgery. He described it as a "thump from your mom when you said something that you weren't supposed to. She'll thump you dead in your ear or on your head. It'll hurt for that little second but it'll go away after 2-3 minutes," according to the Charlotte Observer. Newton has a month to go before Week 1 so we aren't concerned yet, especially because the intention of the surgery was to strengthen his ligaments. He might run less early in the year, but he still has top-three fantasy QB upside and is being drafted 10th among quarterbacks.

Description: Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle surgery) is out of his walking boot and ready to begin his rehab work, according to Steve Reed of the Associated Press.
Insight: Newton was given a four-month timetable when he had left ankle surgery in mid-March. He's not expected to resume practicing before training camp, but his health won't be a concern when the season starts. Newton's supporting cast, however, may be an issue after Steve Smith signed with the Ravens and LT Jordan Gross retired. The Panthers drafted 6-foot-5 receiver Kelvin Benjamin out of Florida State with the 28th-overall pick in the 2014 draft, but he may not be ready to make an immediate impact.

Description: Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle surgery) is unlikely to practice before training camp, GM Dave Gettleman said Tuesday during a radio appearance.
Insight: Newton was given a four-month timetable when he had ankle surgery last week. When it comes to Newton's fantasy value, we're far more concerned about Carolina's receiving corps than the surgery.

Insight: He's going to be out for the next four months. Newton has never missed a game in his NFL career. If the recovery takes longer than expected, Derek Anderson would open the year as Carolina's starting quarterback.

Description: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will undergo surgery on his left ankle. The procedure should keep him sidelined for about four months. SOURCE: Joe Person, Charlotte Observer
Insight: Newton frequently dealt with ankle problems last season though he didn't miss any games. The delay in surgery will put him on a tight schedule to make training camp in late July.

12/22/2013 5:28:00 PM
Description: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton struggled Sunday against the Saints but he came through with a game-winning TD to Domenik Hixon with 23 seconds remaining.
Insight: Newton frequently sailed his passes and finished with 181 yards, one TD and one interception. To be fair, he played most of the game without Steve Smith, who suffered a non-contact knee injury in the first half. Newton also rushed just four times for six yards.

Hot12/1/2013 5:41:00 PM
Description: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton threw for 263 yards, two touchdowns and two picks and rushed for 68 yards and another touchdown Sunday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Newton has scored multiple touchdowns in three straight games and is much less of a boom-or-bust option than he was earlier this season.

Hot11/3/2013 5:44:00 PM
Description: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton struggled Sunday against the Falcons but still had a solid fantasy day.
Insight: Newton threw for 249 yards and two picks and rushed for 22 yards on five carries, but he threw for a touchdown and ran for another. Newton has been a boom-or-bust fantasy player far too often over the last two years, so it was nice to see him scratch out this type of game coming off a big effort in Week 8 at Tampa Bay.

Hot10/20/2013 6:16:00 PM
Description: The Panthers didn't need Cam Newton to do much in order to defeat the Rams Sunday.
Insight: Newton was extremely efficient but only had to throw the ball 17 times. He completed 15 for 204 yards and a touchdown through the air and rushed for 26 yards on 10 carries. The Carolina signal-caller has been a boom-or-bust QB1 over the past two seasons and that won't change the rest of this year.

Hot9/22/2013 6:03:00 PM
Description: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton starred in Week 3 against the Giants, accounting for four touchdowns.
Insight: Newton had 223 passing yards and three scores through the air and gained 45 yards on the ground with one rushing touchdown. The third-year QB struggled against Seattle in Week 1 but has scored six touchdowns in the last two games.

Hot12/23/2012 4:28:00 PM
Description: Panthers QB Cam Newton threw for 170 yards, one touchdown and one pick and rushed for 60 yards and a score Sunday
Insight: The interception was Newton's first turnover since Week 10 versus Denver. He has scored 15 touchdowns in his last five games.

Hot12/17/2012 7:36:00 PM
Description: Panthers QB Cam Newton had two touchdowns with 231 passing yards Sunday against San Diego.
Insight: Newton has produced 12 total touchdowns with zero turnovers in his last four games and 17 touchdowns with two turnovers in his last seven.

Hot12/9/2012 6:23:00 PM
Description: Panthers QB Cam Newton has reverted to rookie form right when fantasy owners needed it most. He stayed hot Sunday with 287 passing yards, 116 rushing yards and three total touchdowns.
Insight: Newton has produced 825 passing yards, 286 rushing yards, 11 total touchdowns and zero turnovers in his last three games. He only had 13 total touchdowns in his first 10 games.

Cold11/15/2012 6:59:00 PM
Description: While the Panthers have been disappointing this season, Cam Newton and company have a good chance to get things going in Week 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Insight: Newton has declined in multiple categories this season -- average passing yards, average rushing yards and touchdowns per game. However, Tampa Bay has allowed 20-plus points to opposing quarterbacks in five of nine games. Yes, the Buccaneers picked off Newton twice and held him to four rushing yards in Week 1 but they have since traded CB Aquib Talib and may be without CB Eric Wright (Achilles) this week. Steve Smith had one catch against the Broncos last Sunday, but Tampa Bay has given up the third most fantasy points per game to opposing wideouts so make sure Smith is in your lineup as well.

Cold11/11/2012 7:01:00 PM
Description: Carolina's Cam Newton threw for 241 yards on 21-of-36 passing Sunday against Denver. He had two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Insight: Newton, along with the entire Panthers team, has been a massive disappointment this season. He's averaged less than one passing touchdown per game and is on pace for seven less rushing touchdowns than last season.
