Final Score: San Diego 38, Jacksonville 13
San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Antoine Cason had two of San Diego's four interceptions of David Garrard, and the Chargers forced six turnovers to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, 38-13, at Qualcomm Stadium.
Philip Rivers completed 22-of-29 passes for 334 yards with three touchdowns and was picked off twice for the Chargers (1-1), who were coming off a 21-14 loss at Kansas City Monday night. Mike Tolbert rushed 16 times for 82 yards and a pair of scores.
"Our defense was awesome today, as they were last week," Rivers said. "We feed off one another."
Chargers rookie running back Ryan Mathews sprained his right ankle during a run in the first quarter.
Garrard completed 15-of-23 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown. Luke McCown entered as a replacement in the fourth quarter and ended 11-of-19 for 120 yards for the Jaguars (1-1), who beat Denver last Sunday.
"I think any explanations of how, what why, all those things would sound like alibis," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said of his team's poor execution. "It's time to take it like a man, understand it wasn't good enough today."
With under a minute remaining, McCown exited the game with an apparent knee injury after scrambling inside the five-yard line. Garrard came in for a fourth-down play and threw a scoring pass to Mike Sims-Walker, who finished with 10 receptions for 105 yards.
Tolbert scored off left tackle to culminate a six-play, 74-yard game-opening drive. Garrard was picked off by Cason at the San Diego six on the ensuing possession, but the miscues continued as Mathews fumbled after a 17-yard reception. That led to a Josh Scobee 44-yard field goal.
Mathews, the 12th overall pick in the draft, was hurt on a three-yard run in Jacksonville territory with nearly three minutes left in the quarter. His ankle was pinned under Jaguars linebacker Kirk Morrison. Mathews was helped off the field and then taken via cart to the locker room. Rivers was intercepted by David Jones in the end zone to thwart San Diego's drive.
Just three plays later, Garrard was picked off again by Cason. The turnover led to Rivers' nine-yard TD pass to Antonio Gates with 11:32 left in the half and a 14-3 lead.
Cason forced a Sims-Walker fumble on the next possession. That started a string of three turnovers in just five plays. Rivers was intercepted, but linebacker Brandon Siler picked off Garrard.
Rashad Jennings blocked a Mike Scifres punt, which led to Scobee's 48-yard field goal just past the two-minute mark of the half.
But Rivers engineered an eight-play, 87-yard drive, which ended in a four-yard TD pass to Gates with 10 seconds left in the half for a 21-6 margin. The big play came on a 43-yard run from Darren Sproles.
Maurice Jones-Drew fumbled the ball in San Diego territory during a rush early in the third quarter, and Nate Kaeding converted a 41-yard field goal for the Chargers.
Garrard was intercepted by Kevin Burnett in the final minute of the third and Tolbert powered in from a yard out less than two minutes into the fourth.
Rivers found Malcolm Floyd for a 54-yard TD pass later in the quarter.
The Chargers have won seven straight home games...Gates has five TD catches in his last three games against the Jaguars. He has 62 TD catches, tied with Shannon Sharpe for second-most all-time among tight ends. Tony Gonzalez is first with 82...This was the first time an NFL game had seven combined turnovers in the first half since Washington beat Arizona, 17-13, on December 11, 2005...The six turnovers tied a Jaguars franchise record.
