NFL Game Summary - Dallas at Washington

(Sunday, December 27th)

Final Score: Dallas 17, Washington 0

Landover, MD (Sports Network) - Tony Romo tossed a pretty touch-pass score to Roy Williams in the first quarter, and the Cowboys defense let it stand up by pitching their first shutout in over six years, as Dallas clinched the NFC's final playoff spot with a 17-0 win over the Redskins.

Romo threw for 286 yards on 25-of-38 efficiency, and Marion Barber rushed for a score. Dallas' defense held Washington to 218 total yards, sacked Jason Campbell three times, picked him off once and forced him to fumble once.

The win not only gets the Cowboys (10-5) back in the playoffs after a one-year absence, but it sets up a winner-take-all scenario for the NFC East title next Sunday in the regular-season finale versus Philadelphia.

"If they (Cowboys defense) play that well and give up no points, I could stay home," Romo said. "If they play that good, I like our chances (against Philadelphia). We really enjoy playing in do or die situations. This team has performed admirably in those situations."

Campbell completed 24-of-39 attempts for 199 yards, with Santana Moss logging 92 yards on eight receptions for Washington (4-11), which added yet another dubious distinction to a terrible season.

The Redskins closed out their NFC East slate 0-6 for only their second winless division schedule dating back to 1970.

Washington failed to find the end zone against Dallas in both meetings this season, falling in Dallas, 7-6, on November 22.

The tone for the game was set right from the beginning, as Campbell was picked off by Terence Newman on the game's opening drive. Dallas took it 36 yards the other way for a score, as Romo led Williams to the back right corner of the end zone from four yards out.

The contest moved to the second quarter with the score still 7-0 before the Cowboys made it a two-score game with a quick 88-yard scoring drive seven minutes in.

Jason Witten, who totaled 117 yards on six catches, got 69 of those on a catch-and-run play to set up Dallas at the Washington three, and Barber bowled into the end zone on the next play for a 14-0 lead that carried over into the second half.

Dallas had a chance to add to its lead in the third quarter, but Barber was twice stuffed on 4th-and-1 plays inside the Redskins' 35.

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips thought better of the situation the next time around, bringing on newly signed kicker and former Redskin Shaun Suisham for a 23-yard field goal when faced with 4th-and-1 just over seven minutes into the fourth.

The true boot gave Dallas a 17-0 advantage, which went unchallenged with Washington's offense in complete disarray, leaving Campbell with little time to throw.

"It's tough having to gear up against your arch rivals. They did a good job with the pass rush. You don't have the time to develop plays," Campbell said.
