Final Score: NY Jets 26, Tampa Bay 3
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Thomas Jones had 24 carries for 99 yards and two touchdowns, as the New York Jets routed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 26-3, at Raymond James Stadium.
Kellen Clemens, who started under center in place of an injured Mark Sanchez, went 12-for-23 for 111 yards. Jay Feely was 4-for-5 on field goals for the Jets (7-6), who have won three straight to get back into the playoff picture after a three-game losing streak.
"It was a big win, obviosuly cause every game in this league is tough," said New York head coach Rex Ryan. "Kellen did a great job of managing the team and had no turnovers. It was a good performance by us and I'm proud of my guys."
Josh Freeman was 14-for-33 with just 93 yards and three interceptions for the Buccaneers (1-12), who have dropped their past five games. Kellen Winslow had four catches for 26 yards in the loss.
"Josh has to learn things the hard way and it's been the hard way the past two weeks," said Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris. "This week we faced one of the best defenses in the league. They sent us all kind of pressures and we couldn't handle them anywhere."
Tampa started the game with the ball, but on the first play Freeman was picked off by David Harris and the Jets had the ball at the Tampa 31-yard line.
However, they were only able to move the ball nine yards and had to settle for a 40-yard field goal from Feely for a 3-0 lead just 2:20 into the game.
After holding Tampa to a three-and-out, the Jets went 58 yards over 14 plays and made it a 6-0 game on a 24-yard field goal from Feely with under five minutes to play in the first.
In the second quarter, New York got the ball back near midfield as Tampa's offense continued to struggle. After moving up 22 yards, Feely's third field goal of the game, a 49-yarder, made it 9-0 with under seven minutes to play in the half.
The Bucs were again held to a three-and-out and on the fourth play of the ensuing New York drive, Jones took the ball 33 yards into the end zone for a 16-0 advantage.
"The line did a great job on that play," said Jones about the touchdown. "I was able to cut back and make the safety miss. It worked exactly as we drew it up and it wound up being a touchdown.
A 49-yard field goal from Feely with 11 seconds left in the first half gave the Jets a 19-0 lead heading into the break.
Tampa, which had just 15 total yards and no first downs in the first half, got a 43-yard field goal from Connor Barth to finish a 30-yard drive and make it a 19-3 game with 4:45 left in the third.
Jones' second touchdown of the game, a seven-yard run with just over nine minutes left in the game, accounted for the final score.
