Keenum to remain Texans' starter
Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak stated Monday that Case Keenum will start at quarterback for the team's upcoming game against Jacksonville, one day after being removed for an ineffective outing in a home loss to the Oakland Raiders.
Kubiak yanked Keenum in favor of former starter Matt Schaub with Houston trailing the Raiders by 11 points in the third quarter. The move failed to provide much of a spark, though, as the Texans managed just two field goals following the change and were dealt a 28-23 setback that extended the club's losing streak to eight games.
Keenum went 13-for-24 for 170 yards with one touchdown and one interception prior to being lifted. Schaub completed 12-of-25 passes for 155 yards in relief.
"Case will start Sunday," said Kubiak. "I have total confidence in him."
Keenum replaced Schaub after the struggling veteran suffered a sprained ankle that kept him out of a Week 7 tilt at Kansas City and has remained the Texans' starter ever since. The former University of Houston standout has thrown for eight touchdowns against just one interception over his four appearances while totaling 992 passing yards.
Though Houston has lost each of Keenum's four starts, each of those defeats have been by five points or less.
Schaub helped the Texans to the AFC South title and a victory in the conference Wild Card Playoffs in each of the past two seasons, but was intercepted nine times -- four of which were returned for touchdowns -- through Houston's first four games of 2013.
