Packers LB Matthews probable vs. Eagles
Green Bay, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Green Bay Packers have turned to backup quarterback Seneca Wallace while starter Aaron Rodgers recovers from a fractured collar bone, but may have a key piece of their defense back for Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Linebacker Clay Matthews, who missed the last four games with a broken thumb, took limited reps in practice all week but was listed as probable to play.
With the offense relying on a longtime NFL backup who wasn't in the league last season, the defense is preparing for an Eagles team that scored 49 points last week against the Oakland Raiders -- all on seven touchdown passes by Nick Foles.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he would monitor Matthews' performance to determine how much he might play Sunday, but there were other factors in play, too.
"You have another component to this. (We're playing) an offense that doesn't huddle, so we'll see how that goes," said McCarthy.
He said Wallace, who has started 21 games in nine-plus seasons, looked better on the field.
"He's a very prideful individual," McCarthy said. "There are a few things he's still working on. There were a couple of things that weren't clean on the field."
McCarthy said Rodgers, who was hurt Monday against the Chicago Bears, has been preparing like he's playing, going through the gameplan and attending every meeting. He hasn't missed a game because of injury since December 2010.
"For us as a football team this is a great opportunity to show you how good we can be," McCarthy said about Rodgers' absence. "It's a great opportunity for everyone on our team to step up."
Packers linebacker Andy Mulumba (ankle) is doubtful for the game and guard T.J. Lang (concussion) and linebacker Nick Perry (foot) are questionable. Defensive tackle Ryan Pickett (knee) and defensive end/linebacker Mike Neal (knee) are probable.
