NCAA Game Summary - Duquesne at Georgetown

(Sunday, November 11)

Final Score: Georgetown 61, Duquesne 55

Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - Freshman D'Vaun Smith-Rivera came off the bench to score 19 points as the Georgetown Hoyas won its season opener over the Duquesne Dukes, 61-55, at Verizon Center.

Smith-Rivera shot 6-of-7 from the field and hit all four of his three-point attempts for the Hoyas (1-0), who's outdoor contest with Florida on Friday night aboard the USS Bataan in Jacksonville was canceled after one half because of condensation on the court. Mikael Hopkins scored 13 points, and Greg Whittington narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and 15 rebounds.

For Duquesne (0-2), Sean Johnson recorded a game-high 21 points and added eight rebounds. Jerry Jones was the only other player in double digits with 10 points. Derrick Colter added seven points and five assists for the Dukes.

The Hoyas (37 percent) and the Dukes (30 percent) both shot poorly from the field in the first half, but Georgetown took a 27-21 lead into intermission thanks in large part to five three-pointers.

The Hoyas led by as many as 11 in the second half. The Dukes kept the game close in the final minutes thanks to a 7-0 run, but Georgetown sealed the victory by hitting 5-of-6 free throws in last 27 seconds of the game.

Duquesne was ice cold from beyond the arc, hitting just 4-of-24 three- pointers.

Georgetown forward Otto Porter suffered an apparent eye injury in the first half and did not return. Porter was named a preseason honorable-mention All- American.
