Final Score: NC State 58, South Florida 57

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Richard Howell's layup with eight seconds remaining helped the sixth-seeded NC State Wolfpack knock off the third-seeded South Florida Bulls, 58-57, in the first round of the 2010 National Invitation Tournament.

Dennis Horner led the way with 25 points and six boards for NC State (20-15), which will take on second-seeded UAB in the second round. Tracy Smith added 14 points and three assists, while Howell finished with nine points.

Dominique Jones tallied 24 points and three steals to guide USF (20-13) in the setback. Jarrid Famous also got into the mix, posting 10 points and seven rebounds.

In the first half, USF shot 41.2 percent from the floor and made 10 free throws for a 26-22 edge at the break.

NC State hung tough in the second half and went ahead on Howell's layup with eight ticks left. The Bulls had a chance to win, but Augustus Gilchrist's shot in the final moments fell well short in the one-point decision.

The Wolfpack won the battle on the boards, 36-26, including a 10-3 edge on the offensive glass.
