Final Score: (7) Syracuse 82, South Florida 65
Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Wesley Johnson produced 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead seventh-ranked Syracuse in an 82-65 defeat of South Florida in a Big East clash at the Carrier Dome.
Rick Jackson added 15 points, and Arinze Onuaku 12 for the Orange (15-1, 2-1 Big East), who have rattled off a pair of wins in response to a 10-point home loss to Pittsburgh last weekend.
Brandon Triche recorded 10 points, six boards and five assists. Andy Rautins added eight points and seven assists, as Syracuse shot at a 50.8 percent clip from the field.
Up next for the Orange is a three-game Big East road trip with games against Rutgers, West Virginia and Notre Dame.
"We want to keep our confidence high, especially going on the road," Rautins said. "We know it is going to be a tough atmosphere to play in. West Virginia, Rutgers and Notre Dame are some of the toughest places to play on the road. We are looking forward to it. We like playing on the road. We are going to try to stay within ourselves and play team basketball."
Dominique Jones poured in 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Bulls (10-5, 0-3), who opened the season with wins in 10 of their first 12 games before dropping the first three games in league play.
Mike Mercer chipped in 13 points, and Jarrid Famous pitched in nine and 12 rebounds in defeat.
The Bulls kept it close in the early going and were trailing 14-13 when Johnson stroked a three and Scoop Jardine added a layup for some breathing room about eight minutes in.
Onuaku converted a three-point play a short time later to kick off a 14-2 stretch for the Orange, which Mookie Jones capped with a three for a 33-19 score with close to four minutes left. Another Mookie Jones trifecta inside the final minute allowed for a 40-28 halftime lead.
Syracuse continued to hold a double-digit lead early in the second half and a Triche bucket close to 6 1/2 minutes in closed out a 15-4 stretch and expanded the margin to 21, 57-36.
Dominique Jones rattled off the next six points for South Florida, but Syracuse was still up 66-47 midway through and never relinquished its double- digit advantage.
"We did a good job defensively today for the most part. We let (Dominique) Jones get away a couple times, and he hurts you when he gets away. We were better with the ball, we moved the ball better on the inside and we finished inside pretty good," said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim.
The Orange have won seven of their eight all-time meetings with the Bulls...Jardine had eight points for Syracuse...Dominique Jones connected on 7-of-13 shots from the floor and 13-of-17 free throws for the Bulls, who shot 40 percent from the field...Syracuse forward Kris Joseph injured his right ankle.
