Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - San Jose SaberCats QB MARK GRIEB has been named Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week. Iowa DB CAMERON McGLENN and Spokane DB/KR TERRANCE SANDERS have been named Riddell Defensive Player of
the Week and JLS Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 1 of the 2012 AFL season. In addition to these three awards, the AFL is also awarding the Cutters Catch of the Week, the AFL Playmaker of the Week and the Spalding Highlight of the Week. The Cutters Catch of the Week award winner for Week 1 is WR MARCO THOMAS of the Iowa Barnstormers, while the AFL Playmaker of the Week is Chicago LB KELVIN MORRIS. The Spalding Highlight of the Week award winner is Chicago QB RUSS MICHNA.
RUSSELL ATHLETIC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
There was no better way for Grieb (6-2, 200, UC Davis) to answer questions about still having fuel left his tank. The veteran turned in a stellar performance in the SaberCats come-from-behind, overtime victory, 71-70, against the Arizona Rattlers. Leading the comeback, Grieb posted 432 passing yards for nine touchdowns without a pick.
RIDDELL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
McGlenn (6-0, 190, Elon) tallied nine tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery in Iowa's 69-63 overtime victory against the Spokane Shock. McGlenn was a constant nuisance to Shock quarterback Erik Meyer and tallied his first interception with 5:47 remaining in the first half and his second with 5:41 remaining in the third.
JLS IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Sanders (5-10,180, Eastern Illinois) notched two missed field goal returns for 67 yards, setting a Barnstormers' franchise record for missed field goal return yards in a game. Sanders notched a 54-yard missed field goal return for a touchdown with 27 seconds remaining, sending the matchup into overtime. Sanders added six kickoff returns for 139 yards, totaling 206 total return yards. He also notched nine tackles, a pass breakup and forced fumble.
CUTTERS CATCH OF THE WEEK
With the score tied and the fans of the Spokane Shock blaring in his ear, WR Marco Thomas (6-1, 195, Western Illinois) broke free of the secondary and caught the game-winning touchdown grab in overtime to give the Iowa Barnstormers the victory. Thomas finished the game with seven catches for 80 yards, none more memorable than his overtime grab however - which left the Shock faithful silent.
AFL PLAYMAKER OF THE WEEK
Kelvin Morris (6-4, 250, Clemson) was a wrecking ball for the Rush defense in their 70-48 rout of the Tampa Bay Storm. From the linebacker position, Morris altered the direction of the game with three takeaways, scoring two touchdowns off interceptions. Morris also recovered a fumble.
SPALDING HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
Michna's (6-2, 220, Western Illinois) eight touchdown passes tied a Chicago Rush franchise-record in their rout against the Tampa Bay Storm, 70-48. Michna finished 24-of-37 for 247 yards along with his eight touchdown passes. Rush WR Reggie Gray was on the receiving end of Rush history with a five yard touchdown grab with 1:10 remaining in the game.
