NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Philadelphia
(Wednesday, January 22nd)
Final Score: Carolina 3, Philadelphia 2
Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jiri Tlusty's third period goal helped guide the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers in a makeup game after the two teams were postponed the day before due to heavy snow.
Andrej Sekera fired a shot from the point that Philadelphia netminder Steve Mason could not control. Tlusty gathered the puck and lifted the rebound into the net to break the tie with close to six minutes remaining.
"The defense made a good shot through the traffic and it kind of bounced right in front of me. I was there by myself so I tried to put it up high and it went in," said Tlusty on his goal.
Alexander Semin scored in his third straight game and Nathan Gerbe also lit the lamp in the win. Anton Khudobin made 22 stops for the Hurricanes, who have won two of their last three.
Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist, while Scott Hartnell supplied the other marker. Mason allowed all three goals on 32 shots as the Flyers lost their second straight game by one goal.
"We're just not playing our best hockey for the first 10 to 15 minutes and then we turn it up after that. It's biting us in the butt, you're not going to be able to do that for the rest of the year," said Wayne Simmonds.
Eric Staal sent an outlet pass through the neutral zone to Semin, who wristed a shot from the right circle through the legs of Andrej Meszaros and over the left shoulder of Mason at 11:57 of the first period.
The Hurricanes took a 2-0 lead 13:38 into the middle frame. Gerbe went in on a breakaway after Luke Schenn could not keep the puck in at the point. Gerbe raced into the Philadelphia zone and quickly put the puck between his legs, flipping a shot off Mason and into the back of the net for a highlight-reel goal.
Giroux got the Flyers on the board with 35 seconds left in the second. The captain skated around the back of the net and banked in Jakub Voracek's shot off Khudobin from below the goal line.
After Riley Nash went to the box for high-sticking Voracek, Simmonds attempted to stuff the puck in the crease, but the rebound bounced out to Hartnell, who wristed home his 12th of the season to tie the game three minutes into the third.
Carolina has won all three games against Philadelphia this season ... Tuesday's postponement was the first time in Flyers history that a home game was canceled due to snow. The last Flyers game to be postponed due to weather, home or away, was the day after that game March 14, 1993 when the blizzard prevented the Flyers from traveling to Hartford for that day's scheduled game ... Patrick Dwyer left the game with an upper-body injury and did not return ... Carolina is now 13-1-4 when scoring first this season.
