NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Carolina
(Monday, January 27th)
Final Score: Carolina 3, Columbus 2
Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Staal and Jordan Staal combined for three third-period goals to lift the Carolina Hurricanes over the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-2, in a come-from-behind effort at PNC Arena.
Eric Staal lit the lamp twice in the span of a minute a little past the midway point of the third and Jordan Staal scored 1:47 later to give Carolina its fourth straight win. Anton Khudobin made 22 saves in the victory.
Derek MacKenzie and R.J. Umberger both scored for the Blue Jackets, who dropped their second straight after stringing together an eight-game streak. Sergei Bobrovsky allowed all three goals on 35 shots in the setback.
"We gave up three goals in less than 3 minutes. For 57 minutes, I thought we managed it pretty well. Those three minutes, that's the game," Blue Jackets head coach Todd Richards said.
The Blue Jackets got on the board quickly. Fedor Tyutin rang a shot off the post and MacKenzie was there to backhand the rebound into the net 2:25 into the game.
Columbus added to their lead 17 seconds later. Nick Foligno stole the puck from a Carolina defender and threw the puck on net from the left boards. Ryan Johansen gathered the puck and dropped it back to Umberger, who quickly beat Khudobin for his 14th of the season.
The Hurricanes finally beat Bobrovsky with just under nine minutes to play in the third. Alexander Semin drove to the middle and slid a pass on the backhand to Eric Staal. The captain moved in on net and fired a shot through the legs of Bobrovsky.
Jiri Tlusty muscled a defender off the puck behind the goal line and dished a pass to Staal in the slot, who wristed home a shot to even the game exactly a minute later.
Jordan Staal skated through the middle one-on-one with Columbus defenseman Ryan Murray and backhanded a shot off a toe drag to beat Bobrovsky as he tumbled to the ice with 5:55 remaining in the third.
"I had some speed coming low, and just kind of went for it from there. I tried to get my reach out there," Jordan Staal said.
Columbus pulled the goalie in the final minute, but Khudobin made multiple huge saves late to preserve the Hurricanes' comeback win.
Carolina snapped a seven-game losing streak to Columbus as its last win against the team was a 2-1 game on Dec. 15, 2005 ... Jordan Staal played in his 100th game as a Hurricane ... Semin and Eric Staal extended their point streaks to six games ... Carolina did not commit a penalty.
