NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Washington
(Saturday, October 19th)
Final Score: Washington 4, Columbus 1
Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Braden Holtby posted 37 saves as the Washington Capitals took a 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.
Alex Ovechkin, Troy Brouwer, Brooks Laich and Joel Ward all scored for the Capitals, who have won two of their last three. Martin Erat had three assists.
"It's nice to have a good game but in the end it's about getting the win," said Erat. "We have a good effort out here tonight and it was nice to get these two points."
Artem Anisimov scored the only goal for the Blue Jackets, who have dropped four straight. Sergei Bobrovsky was tagged for all four goals on 39 shots in the loss.
"I think we started to go after them later in the game," said Columbus head coach Todd Richards. "But we got what we deserved because we were lazy in the first two periods."
The first period passed without a goal, but the Caps got on the board 1:58 into the second on the power play as a short pass from the right side of the net by Marcus Johansson found Ward in the slot for a one-timer past Bobrovsky.
It was a 2-0 game six minutes later as Steve Olesky danced around a defender at the right circle and got a shot on net. Bobrovsky was there to make the save, but Laich pounced on the rebound for his second of the year.
Brouwer made it a 3-0 game 4:20 into the third when he took a pass from Erat in the slot, snapped a shot on net that Bobrovsky stopped and slipped home his own rebound.
Ovechkin's one-timer from the left circle while on the man advantage at 6:34 gave the Caps a 4-0 advantage.
Anisimov broke up Holtby's shutout bid with 4:55 to play when he tapped home a nice feed from Marian Gaborik in front.
Columbus hosts Vancouver on Sunday ... Washington starts a four-game road trip in Winnipeg on Tuesday ... Washington has won four straight in the series ... The Caps were 2-for-4 on the power play, while Columbus failed on its three chances.
