(Thursday, December 12th)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 2, Detroit 1 (SO)
Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Martin St. Louis tallied the shootout winner in the sixth round and Ben Bishop stopped all six shots he faced to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.
After the first five shooters for both sides missed their attempts, St. Louis skated down the right side before cutting back to the middle and sneaking a wrister past Jonas Gustavsson.
Johan Franzen was the last hope for Detroit, but Bishop easily turned away his final wrist shot.
"We did a good job of containing them," Bishop said. "They have a lot of offensive guys over there."
Nikita Kucherov scored in regulation for Tampa Bay, which snapped a brief two- game losing streak. Bishop made 28 saves to earn the win.
Kyle Quincey netted the lone goal for the Red Wings. Gustavsson stopped 26- of-27 shots in the setback.
"I felt good about my game," Gustavsson said.
Late in the first period, Gustav Nyquist skated down the right side and dropped a pass back for a charging Quincey, who ripped a backhand on goal. Bishop turned away the first attempt, but the Wings defenseman slapped home his own rebound for an 1-0 Detroit edge.
The Lightning struck back in the final minute of the second. Kucherov picked up a loose puck in front of the net facing the wrong direction, quickly turned and snapped a shot past a screened Bishop with 44 seconds left in the period.
Tampa Bay earned a power play late in regulation that extended into overtime, but it failed to capitalize. The Lightning were held without a shot on goal in the extra session while Bishop stopped five shots he saw to force the shootout.
The Red Wings have lost 11 straight shootouts including all six this season ... Tampa has taken both meetings between the clubs this year ... Detroit has lost three games in a row and four of five.
