NHL Game Summary - Los Angeles at Tampa Bay
(Tuesday, October 15th)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 5, Los Angeles 1
Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Malone scored 19 seconds into the game, and the Tampa Bay Lightning never looked back from there.
Martin St. Louis had two goals and set up another in the Lightning's 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Tampa Bay Times Forum.
Malone, ex-King Teddy Purcell and Ondrej Palat each registered a goal and an assist to back Ben Bishop, who improved to 4-0 this season with a 30-save effort.
"I thought our team played real well," Bishop said. "We blocked shots. We kind of talked about that before the game, getting in front of the lanes a little bit more. I thought some big blocks were made in the second."
Jonathan Quick got the start in goal for Los Angeles and was replaced by Ben Scrivens after St. Louis made it 3-0 with 3:38 remaining in the second period.
St. Louis scored on a delayed penalty call, firing home a rebound of a Steven Stamkos shot from the slot.
Quick departed having made 14 saves for Los Angeles, which had its winning streak end at three games.
"You can't give up Grade A chances like we did tonight," said Kings defenseman Matt Greene.
Los Angeles defenseman Slava Voynov spoiled Bishop's shutout bid at the 10:27 mark of the third period, but the Bolts twice beat Scrivens, who had not allowed a goal in his previous two appearances this season.
Malone fed St. Louis for a one-timer at the right side of the net to finish off a 3-on-2 rush at 12:40. Palat lit the lamp with 1:21 to play.
The Lightning wasted little time getting on the board. Malone went to the net to set up a screen and wound up having Sami Salo's point shot deflect in off his skate.
Purcell, who played in 91 games with the Kings from 2007-10, doubled the advantage with 7:16 remaining in the first period. Purcell sped down the left wing and Voynov was unable to tie up his stick as he switched from the backhand to the forehand and fired a shot over Quick's glove.
The Kings had a goal waved off 32 seconds into the second period because of contact with Bishop.
St. Louis picked up the secondary assist on Malone's goal for his 900th career point with the Lightning ... Tampa Bay snapped a three-game losing streak to the Kings and improved to 2-1-0 on its season-long, seven-game homestand ... Tampa Bay defenseman Andrej Sustr picked up his first career NHL point with the secondary assist on St. Louis' first goal.
