NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at Anaheim
(Thursday, October 10th)
Final Score: Anaheim 6, NY Rangers 0
Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jakob Silfverberg scored twice and Jonas Hiller stopped 34 shots for his first shutout of the season as the Anaheim Ducks pounded the New York Rangers, 6-0, on Thursday.
Daniel Winnik and Dustin Penner posted a goal and an assist while Saku Koivu and Ryan Getzlaf scored for the Ducks, who played their first home game of the season and have won three straight since losing to Colorado to start the year.
For a second straight game the Rangers got torched in their own end, as this poor defensive showing followed a 9-2 loss to San Jose on Tuesday that saw 19- year-old Tomas Hertl post four goals.
Henrik Lundqvist, who gave up four goals on Tuesday before being pulled, allowed all six goals on 37 shots on Thursday as the Rangers fell to 1-3-0 on the young season.
Anaheim took the lead 5:06 in as Cory Perry skated in down the right side and made a move around the defender before sending the puck to the slot where Getzlaf one-timed it home.
Just over four minutes later, Teemu Selanne took a pass to the right of the net and tried to stuff it in. Lundqvist made the stop, but Silfverberg was there to stuff in the rebound.
It was 3-0 at 11:36 of the first as Winnik used his defender as a screen and snapped a shot in off the pipe for his first of the year.
A defensive miscue led to the fourth Anaheim goal as two Rangers collided in their own end. Lundqvist then came way out of his net to try to get the puck, but Selanne wound up with it and banked a shot off the net before Silfverberg cleaned up the garbage from the left wing at 1:27.
Anaheim scored again at 8:15 on Koivu's second of the year, and Penner was able to stuff in a Perry shot at 16:15 of the second for a 6-0 lead.
Hiller turned aside 17 shots in the third period to finish off his 17th shutout of his career.
Anaheim set a franchise-record for most goals scored in a home opener ... The Ducks host the Senators on Sunday ... New York continues its nine-game road trip to start the season in St. Louis on Saturday.
