Final Score: Colorado 4, Calgary 2
Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jean-Sebastien Giguere posted 30 saves to
remain perfect on the season and help the Colorado Avalanche bounce back from
their second setback of the season with a 4-2 decision over the Calgary Flames
on Friday at Pepsi Center.
Giguere improved to 5-0-0 and has allowed just five goals this year to help
the Avalanche improve to 13-2-0 on the season, matching the franchise record
for the best start to a campaign set by the Quebec Nordiques in 1995.
Ryan O'Reilly registered a goal and an assist, while John Mitchell, Matt
Duchene and Paul Stastny added a goal apiece in the victory.
Mike Cammalleri netted both Calgary goals, while Karri Ramo stopped 23 shots
for the Flames, who have lost three straight and five of their last six games.
"We started slow and we just cannot open up like that," Cammalleri said. "We
cannot spot anyone any goals, let alone these teams that are playing well."
O'Reilly opened the scoring 5:31 into the contest when he rifled a one-timer
from the slot past the right pad of Ramo to make it 1-0.
Stastny scored his sixth of the season on the power play 1:09 into the second
to double Colorado's lead, but Cammalleri countered with a one-timer from the
low right side at 6:07 to bring the Flames within one.
Mitchell restored Colorado's two-goal lead just over a minute later, as he got
himself open just inside the right circle before taking a quick feed from
Nathan MacKinnon and wristing a shot past Rammo to make it 3-1 at 7:16.
"I just tried to find a soft area in the slot," Mitchell said. "I really did
not need to move much. I just wanted to get the shot off as quick as I could."
Cammalleri scored his second of the night 2:30 later to make it a one-goal
game again, but Giguere turned away all comers the rest of the way to keep
Colorado in front.
Duchene added an empty-netter in the closing seconds to account for the final
