Islanders sign Boyes, Carkner

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Islanders plucked a pair of free agents within minutes of each other Sunday, signing forward Brad Boyes and defenseman Matt Carkner.

No terms of the deals were released, but Boyes' deal is reported to be for one year at $1 million, while Carkner was reported to receive a three-year pact worth $4.5 million.

Boyes totaled just eight goals and 23 points in 65 games for the Buffalo Sabres this past season, his lowest single-season goal total of his seven- plus-year NHL career.

In 558 games with the Sharks, Bruins, Blues and Sabres, the 30-year-old suburban Toronto native has tallied 158 times and dished out 214 assists.

Carkner played in just 29 games for the Ottawa Senators in 2011-12 thanks to right knee surgery performed at the outset of the campaign. He ended with a goal, two assists and 33 penalty minutes.

In 162 career contests, all but one with the Senators, Carkner has totaled four goals, 22 points and 361 PIM.
