Hurricanes add Nieuwendyk to front office

Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Carolina Hurricanes have named Joe Nieuwendyk as a pro scout and advisor.

Nieuwendyk, a three-time Stanley Cup winner and Hall of Fame player, served as the general manager for the Dallas Stars from 2009-13. He also worked in the front office for Toronto and Carolina before his GM stint in Dallas.

"Joe brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our organization," said Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis in a statement Wednesday. "He will be based in Dallas and will be a major asset to the Hurricanes in player evaluations."

Nieuwendyk won the Stanley Cup with three different teams, first in 1989 with Calgary, then with Dallas in 1999 and again in 2003 with New Jersey. He is 22nd on the all-time list with 564 goals and notched 1,126 points in 1,257 games during his stellar career.

The 47-year-old Ontario native was the Calder Trophy winner as the league's top rookie for the 1987-88 season and was the Conn Smythe winner as playoff MVP for the Stars in 1999. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011.
