Senators strike new broadcast deal
Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Ottawa Senators, Bell Media and TSN/RDS of Canada on Wednesday announced the details of a new 12-year deal for exclusive regional broadcast rights to the hockey club.
"We recognized early on that our regional broadcast rights coming up for renewal was a very important asset," said Senators owner Eugene Melnyk. "This new 12-year agreement with Bell Media represents one of the most wide-ranging and comprehensive deals in NHL history. A long-term deal was personally important as it will allow us to work very closely with the Bell family to continually integrate emerging and evolving technologies so our fans receive a superior product for our regional television and radio broadcasts. This agreement is significant for the Senators, our fans and the future of our franchise."
Starting next season, both broadcast outlets will have exclusive rights to televise games throughout the club's designated region, which encompasses eastern and northern Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Canada, along with Newfoundland and Labrador.
The new pact calls for regional broadcast rights to Senators games in English on TSN for a minimum of 52 preseason and regular-season games, and on RDS in French for a minimum of 40 preseason and regular-season games.
In addition, English-language radio station TSN Radio 1200 will hold rights to broadcast all games regardless of season. Details of French-language radio rights will be revealed at a later time.
"This comprehensive partnership marks an exciting new chapter for the Ottawa Senators and all of their fans, as well as TSN, RDS, and Bell," said Kevin Crull, President of Bell Media. "Leveraging the strength of the world-class hockey production at TSN and RDS, as well as Bell's extensive assets and reach, we are eager to amplify Ottawa Senators regional coverage to a whole new level."
Bell Media, which also operates TSN radio stations in other Canadian cities, also holds the rights to Maple Leafs, Jets, Canadiens and Canucks broadcasts.
