Flames announce Begin retirement

Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Prior to a 5-2 home setback to the Winnipeg Jets, the Calgary Flames announced the retirement of Steve Begin, who had yet to play in the league this year.

The 35-year-old forward returned to Calgary during the lockout-shortened 2013 campaign, totaling four goals and eight points in 36 contests. He missed the entire previous campaign while recovering from a career-threatening hip injury.

"Steve had a career marked with great diligence and effort," said Flames president of hockey operations Brian Burke. "On behalf of the Calgary Flames Organization and ownership group, I congratulate him on his 15 year NHL career and wish him success in his future endeavors."

Begin, a native of Quebec, was Calgary's second-round selection in the 1996 draft. He made his NHL debut during the 1996-97 season, but didn't stick with the Flames until 2001, the season after which he led the club's AHL affiliate to a Calder Cup championship.

He later played for the Canadiens, Bruins and Predators.

Over 524 games, Begin totaled 56 goals and 108 points along with 561 penalty minutes.
