Coyotes' Hanzal suspended 2 games for hit

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Phoenix Coyotes center Martin Hanzal has been suspended two games by the NHL for a hit on Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jeff Petry.

Hanzal received a charging penalty in the first period of Phoenix's 5-4 win on Saturday after checking Petry into the boards behind Edmonton's net.

In a video explaining the suspension, Brian Leetch noted Hanzal came "from a distance at considerable speed" and launched himself into Petry, driving his forearm into the defenseman's head.

Leetch said Hanzal's skates left the ice prior to contact, making the hit a penalty.

"The fact that he makes significant contact to the head, and with force, elevates this charging penalty to a suspension," said Leetch, who works in the NHL's department of player safety.

Petry wasn't injured on the play, but Leetch said the NHL took into account prior discipline levied on Hanzal, who was suspended one game during the 2012 Western Conference Finals for checking Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown from behind.
