Description: Cardinals tight end Jake Ballard announced his retirement Wednesday.
Insight: Ballard has never been the same after injuring a knee in Super Bowl XLVI against the Patriots. That 2011 season was the only one in which Ballard had any significant fantasy value.

Description: Tight end Jake Ballard was waived by the New England Patriots.
Insight: With Ballard looking slower than molasses, the Patriots found youngster Zach Sudfeld (Nevada) to be a better option behind Rob Gronkowski.

Description: Tight end Jake Ballard wasn't moving well at all at Patriots OTAs this month. SOURCE: Boston Globe
Insight: That isn't surprising when you consider how many surgeries he's had on his knees over the past couple years. With Ballard looking slower than molasses, the Patriots better start looking at other options at tight end. New England fans will be praying for Rob Gronkowski to recover quickly from back surgery.

Description: In a surprising move, the New England Patriots scooped up Jake Ballard Wednesday just two days after he was waived by the Giants.
Insight: A classic Bill Belichick move: the Patriots essentially steal Ballard from the Giants despite having absolutely no use for him (they already have two of the best tight ends in the league). New York head coach Tom Coughlin had been hoping that the Giants would be able to re-sign Ballard later on in the offseason but now that's no longer a possibility. Ballard had a breakout season for the Giants in 2011 (604 yards, four touchdown catches) but he'll miss this season due to a torn ACL suffered ironically against the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.

Description: New York Giants tight end Jake Ballard was waived/failed physical by the team on Monday. Ballard tore his right ACL and meniscus in Super Bowl XLVI.
Insight: Ballard had 38 receptions for 604 yards and four scores last season. He'll sit out the year and attempt a comeback in 2013. The Giants picked up Martellus Bennett in the off-season.
