By John McMullen, NFL Editor

(Sports Network) - The Arizona Cardinals will aim to improve to 3-0 in preseason play under new coach Bruce Arians when they welcome the San Diego Chargers to University of Phoenix Stadium.

Arizona ran its record to 2-0 with a 12-7 win over the visiting Dallas Cowboys last week. The Cardinals earned the victory by forcing six Dallas turnovers, including five in the first half. Arizona's eight takeaways in the preseason is tied with Chicago for the NFL lead.

Rookie free agent safety Tony Jefferson was the standout in last week's contest, totaling two interceptions, two tackles for loss and two passes defensed in the outing. Free agent inside linebacker Jasper Brinkley, added two fumble recoveries, while rookie safety Tyrann Mathieu led all defenders with a game-high seven tackles.

On offense, running back Rashard Mendenhall made his Cards debut, totaling 32 yards on seven attempts. Arizona native Kerry Taylor posted a strong outing with four receptions for a game-high 85 yards while Jay Feely made four of his five field goal attempts.

Carson Palmer got the start for the Arizona, completing 7-of-15 passes for 66 yards on three series. Drew Stanton was 10-for-19 for 152 yards and an interception.

The Chargers, on the other hand, fell to 0-2 under their rookie head coach, Mike McCoy, after a 33-28 loss at Chicago.

Ryan Mathews rushed for 45 yards on nine carriers and Ladarius Green caught five parses for 78 yards and a touchdown for San Diego.

Philip Rivers was 5-for-9 passing for 50 yards and Charlie Whitehurst completed 9-of-13 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

This week's matchup between the Cardinals and Chargers marks the 20th all-time preseason meeting between the two teams in a series that dates back to 1970. San Diego holds a slim 10-9 edge.
